Biographical Notes

Valentina Gargiulo holds a Master’s Degree in Chemistry (summa cum laude), obtained in 2005 at the University Federico II, Naples,. In 2008, during the PhD, she spent 6 months in the laboratory of Prof. J. Jimenez-Barbero at Centro de Investigaciones Biologicas of Madrid performing molecular modeling experiments. In 2009 she obtained the PhD in Chemistry at the University of Naples Federico II exposing a three-year experimental work.
Since September 2010 she has been working at the Institute for Research on Combustion IRC-CNR of Naples as a research fellow under the supervision of Dr. M. Alfè.
Today, her scientific interests deal with the synthesis and chemical and morphological characterization of advanced materials for technological and environmental applications. Her technical-analytical competences allowed her to take part in many other research activities aimed to the characterization of combustion- or pyrolysis- by-products.

Her research activities could be summarized as follows:

- Bulk synthesis, functionalization, chemico-physical and morphological characterization and evaluation of possible technological applications (CO2 capture, selective photoxidation, water remediation) of organic/inorganic composite materials containing carbon black, as organic component, or its hydrophilic derivatives and, as inorganic component, metal oxides (Fe3O4, TiO2, SiO2) or metal organic frameworks (MOF);

- Bulk synthesis and chemico-physical and morfological characterization of carbonaceous nanoparticles with relevance for material science and energetics, including graphene-like structures and their biocompatible hybrids;

- Chromatographic separation, spectroscopic and spectrometric characterization of products derived from biomasses pyrolysis processes;

- Chemico-physical characterization of complex carbonaceous mixtures (pitches and crude oils) and combustion by-products generated by controlled laboratory apparatus (laminar flames, model engines).

Her scientific results led to the production of 31 publications on international journals and books (hindex 7, 151 citations, source Scopus @Febbraio 2016) and many contributes at national and international meetings.
