Research Topics
The research interest of Maria Elena Russo concerns with enzyme and microorganism based bioconversion processes. In particular:
Her research activity is currently focused on i) biomimetic carbon dioxide capture processes catalysed by carbonic anhydrase; ii) pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass for biorefinery purposes; iii) bio-fuels (butanol) production by Clostridium acetobutylicum from high sugar content wastewater and lignocellulosic feedstock. She is author of 36 scientific papers on chemical and biochemical engineering in peer reviewed journals, and several contributions to international conferences.

Biographical Notes
Maria Elena Russo got the Master Degree in Chemical Engineering with honours in 2003 at the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II. She worked in 2004 at ERG Raffinerie Mediterranee (Genova, IT). From 2004 to 2007 she attended the PhD course in Industrial Biotechnology at the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, in 2008 she defended the PhD thesis ‘Intensification of bioconversion processes: design and development of reactors with high biocatalyst loading’. As a PhD student and Post-doc she attended several schools and courses including the ‘Biofilm school’ at the University of Minho (Braga, PT) and the school on ‘Mathematical methods for chemical engineering’ at the Università di Bologna Alma Mater (Bologna, IT). She held two post-doc positions in the scientific area of chemical engineering from 2008 to 2012 at the Dipartimento di Ingegneria Chimica - Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II. From 2004 to 2012 she was involved in several research projects including the FP6 project SOPHIED "Sustainable bioprocesses for the european colour industries ", CONTRACT E.C. N: NMP2-CT-2004-505899 National project “Puracqua – Decolorazione, depurazione e reimpiego delle acque di scarico di aziende tessili con biomasse fungine inattivate” supported by Regione Lombardia; Research contract “Sequestro di anidride carbonica da fumi di combustione per via enzimatica” between Dipartimento di Ingegneria Chimica Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II and ENEL Ingegneria e Innovazione S.p.A.; Accordo di Programma MSE/CNR per Attività di Ricerca di Sistema – project CARBONE PULITO.
Since 2012 she is Researcher at the Istituto di Ricerche sulla Combustione of CNR in Napoli and she is currently scientific corresponding of IRC for the national project PON03_00157 Smart Generation and the EU H2020 project Waste2Fuels grant agreement n°654623 (http://www.waste2fuels.eu/). In March 2017 she held the National Scientific Qualification (D.D. n. 1532-29/07/2016) for university professorship in chemical engineerin
